Form 3CA vs Form 3CB: Which Tax Audit Report Applies for AY 2026-27?
Form 3CA applies where accounts are audited under another law, while Form 3CB applies in other tax audit cases. Form 3CD accompanies both for AY 2026-27.
Form 3CA vs Form 3CB is a basic tax audit question, but it becomes especially important in 2026 because the filing happens after the new Income-tax Act has commenced.
For FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27, the Income-tax Act, 1961 continues to govern the tax audit. Therefore, the familiar Form 3CA, Form 3CB and Form 3CD structure still applies.
When is Form 3CA used?
Form 3CA is used where the assessee's accounts are already required to be audited under another law.
A common example is a company whose accounts are audited under the Companies Act. The tax auditor refers to that statutory audit and furnishes Form 3CA along with Form 3CD.
When is Form 3CB used?
Form 3CB is used where the assessee is required to undergo tax audit under Section 44AB but the accounts are not required to be audited under another law in the manner contemplated for Form 3CA.
This is common for many proprietorships and partnership firms that cross the tax-audit threshold.
What is Form 3CD?
Form 3CD is the detailed statement of prescribed particulars that accompanies the applicable audit report.
It covers areas such as:
- basic assessee and business information;
- method of accounting and stock valuation;
- depreciation;
- specified deductions and disallowances;
- MSME and Section 43B reporting;
- TDS/TCS information;
- loans, deposits and specified cash transactions;
- turnover and quantitative information; and
- GST-related expenditure reporting.
Who uploads the report?
The Chartered Accountant uploads the tax audit report through the e-filing system using the prescribed authentication process. The taxpayer then completes the acceptance process through the taxpayer account.
Important transition point for 2026
Do not use the new tax-audit form merely because the filing is happening after 1 April 2026.
The determining factor is the period to which the audit relates. FY 2025-26 belongs to AY 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 1961, so Form 3CA/3CB with Form 3CD remains applicable.
For Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 2025, tax audit moves to Section 63 and a new unified Form 26. That is a different reporting year.
Stabilise the financial statements before finalising Form 3CD
Many Form 3CD clauses depend on the final financial statements. If depreciation, MSME balances, capital accounts or expenses are still changing, the tax audit report can require repeated revisions.
assureOffice Financial Builder helps prepare structured Balance Sheet, P&L and Notes from Tally or Excel so the audit team can move to Form 3CD with a more stable base.
