Credit is a tax offset, not a deduction from income

A company within the ordinary MAT framework can use eligible brought-forward section 115JAA credit in AY 2026–27 only when normal tax exceeds MAT, and only within that excess and the surviving credit balance. It cannot reduce taxable income, book profit or tax below the applicable MAT floor. This article builds the return credit ledger; it does not replace the separate book-profit computation. The applicable return is for FY 2025–26 under the Income-tax Act, 1961, notwithstanding its filing after 1 April 2026. Sources and versions were checked on 27 October 2026. Income-tax Act, 1961: sections 115JAA and 115JB.

Establish the opening entitlement from tax records

Start with each originating assessment year, gross credit, all earlier utilisation, changes arising from processing or assessment orders, and the balance still available. Tie these figures to filed returns, section 143(1) intimations, assessment/appellate/rectification orders, tax payments and the preceding closing MATC working. An asset in the financial statements is not itself proof of tax entitlement. Conversely, an accounting impairment does not by itself cancel a subsisting statutory credit. Resolve unexplained differences before copying a software opening balance. Income-tax Act, 1961: sections 115JAA and 115JB.

Apply the fifteen succeeding assessment years correctly

Section 115JAA(3A) permits section 115JB credit through the fifteenth assessment year immediately succeeding its originating AY, subject to the law governing that vintage. Thus a valid, unexhausted AY 2011–12 credit reaches its final usable AY in 2026–27; AY 2010–11 is already outside that window. The form provides prior-year rows from 2011–12 to 2025–26. This is a window for statutory utilisation, not a promise that every old historical credit survived all earlier legal limits or orders. Credit does not earn interest. Prioritising the earliest expiring valid vintage is a practical control; maintain the actual AY allocation. Income-tax Act, 1961: sections 115JAA and 115JB. Separately identify any final-vintage balance that will lapse after this AY: an arithmetic closing amount is not permission to use it beyond its statutory window. Reconcile lapses to the amount described as available in subsequent years.

Map the computation to MATC and Part B-TTI

MATC item 1 takes the total MAT liability from Part B-TTI 1d; item 2 takes normal gross liability from Part B-TTI 2f. Both include their applicable surcharge and cess. Item 3 is the positive excess of item 2 over item 1, otherwise zero. In item 4, columns B1, B2 and B3 represent gross credit, earlier set-off and opening balance; C records current utilisation and D the closing balance. Compute opening balance as gross credit less earlier set-off and closing balance as opening less current utilisation. Total C cannot exceed either item 3 or the eligible opening pool. MATC item 5 feeds Part B-TTI item 4; item 6 records the credit available subsequently. Notified AY 2026–27 ITR-6: Schedule MATC and Part B-TTI.

Read labels and schema together where the printed form is inconsistent

The notified MATC table prints B3 with a reversed subtraction and references total rows inconsistently as xvii/xviii. Do not turn those apparent typographical errors into negative entitlements or manually alter a filed JSON. The schema separately identifies MATCredGross, MATCredSetOff, MATCredBF, MATCredUtilCurrYr and BalMATCredCF, with nonnegative amounts. Validation rules 677–684 link the liability fields, positive difference and column totals; the printed text of rule 677 also retains an earlier AY reference. Use the AY 2026–27 utility’s correctly labelled fields, independently reconcile the arithmetic, and raise a documented portal issue if the live output conflicts with the statute. AY 2026–27 schema: ScheduleMATC and UtilMATCredAvl.

Separate new credit from use of an earlier credit

Where MAT exceeds normal tax, there is no current utilisation ceiling available for old credit. Subject to section 115JAA, the current excess can create a new AY 2026–27 vintage, recorded in the current-year row rather than treated as brought forward and spent in the same year. Foreign tax credit requires the special section 115JAA(2A) adjustment: excess foreign tax credit allowed against MAT over that admissible against normal tax is excluded from MAT-credit creation. Keep gross Indian liabilities and both foreign-credit computations visible; a single net tax figure hides the adjustment. Income-tax Act, 1961: sections 115JAA and 115JB. Confirm that the relevant MAT has actually been paid; booking a liability or recognising an accounting asset alone does not establish the tax-paid condition.

Check the corporate regime before opening MATC

Section 115JAA(8) expressly excludes a person exercising section 115BAA. AY validation rule 683 says MATC should not be filled for either 115BAA or 115BAB; rule 674 excludes MAT computation for both. Do not import an old MAT-credit balance as a payment credit against either concessional regime. A section 115BA election alone does not give this MAT exclusion. A successor LLP cannot inherit the predecessor company’s credit under section 115JAA(7). If an order changes a source-year liability, section 115JAA(6) requires consequential credit changes; assess the appropriate correction of affected returns/orders, rather than overwriting history. AY 2026–27 validation rules 674 and 677–684.

Close the return without confusing credit and cash payments

Maintain separate workings for tax liability, MAT credit, treaty relief and TDS/TCS/advance/self-assessment tax. In Part B-TTI, gross tax is the higher of normal liability and MAT, then eligible prior MAT credit is deducted at item 4. It is not a challan and must not also enter Schedule IT. After filing, compare the processed MAT credit and closing ledger with the submitted return. The current official download page lists ITR-6 offline utility 1.0.1 dated 16 October 2026 and Excel utility 1.1 dated 15 October; recheck versions at submission. Future tax-year changes under the 2025 Act must be tested separately and must not rewrite the AY 2026–27 calculation.

Six worked illustrations

All facts and amounts below are fictional. Assumptions describe the model, not additional statutory rules. Tax figures show the computation stage; the final net payable or refund is rounded under section 288B to the nearest ₹10 after all applicable adjustments.

Illustrative example 1: Opening balance and full utilisation

Gross credit from a valid prior vintage is ₹12,00,000 and earlier utilisation ₹4,00,000: opening ₹8,00,000. Current normal liability is ₹26,00,000 and MAT ₹15,60,000, both final totals including applicable surcharge/cess. Ceiling is ₹10,40,000; use the lower ₹8,00,000. Tax after this credit is ₹18,00,000 and closing credit is nil, before other relief, payments and interest.

Illustrative example 2: Ceiling smaller than the pool

Opening eligible credit is ₹10,00,000. Normal liability ₹18,20,000 less MAT ₹15,60,000 gives capacity ₹2,60,000. Utilisation is ₹2,60,000; closing credit ₹7,40,000. The remaining pool is not a current refund claim.

Illustrative example 3: MAT year creates a new vintage

MAT liability is ₹15,60,000 and normal liability ₹10,40,000, with no foreign-credit difference. Assume the MAT has actually been paid. New AY 2026–27 credit is ₹5,20,000. Old eligible credit ₹2,00,000 is not utilised because normal tax does not exceed MAT. The aggregate ledger closes at ₹7,20,000, classified into old and new vintages.

Illustrative example 4: Expiry-sensitive allocation

Eligible AY 2011–12 balance is ₹1,50,000 and AY 2012–13 balance ₹2,00,000. Available current ceiling is ₹2,00,000. Allocate ₹1,50,000 to the first vintage and ₹50,000 to the second: closing ₹1,50,000 belongs to 2012–13. The final usable AY of the first is 2011 + 15 = 2026; an assumed AY 2010–11 balance is excluded, not rolled into the pool.

Illustrative example 5: Order changes the opening credit

A source-year order reduces valid gross credit from ₹9,00,000 to ₹7,50,000. Earlier use is ₹3,00,000 and current use ₹1,00,000. Correct closing is ₹3,50,000, not the stale ₹5,00,000: a ₹1,50,000 difference. This assumes the earlier use remains supportable; if the order also affects utilisation, redo that chain.

Illustrative example 6: Foreign-credit differential

Assume MAT has actually been paid. Gross MAT ₹15,60,000 less gross normal liability ₹10,40,000 gives ₹5,20,000. Foreign tax credit admissible against MAT is ₹3,00,000 and against normal tax ₹1,00,000. Exclude the ₹2,00,000 excess from creation, leaving new MAT credit ₹3,20,000. Do not retain ₹5,20,000 merely because the gross-liability difference is correct.

Sixteen practitioner FAQs

1. Is MAT credit the same as book loss?

No. Book losses affect the independently computed MAT base; section 115JAA credit offsets tax within its own ceiling.

2. Can the accounting MAT-credit asset establish entitlement?

No. Trace tax returns, payments, utilisation and binding orders separately from accounting recognition.

3. Which fields provide the current tax comparison?

MATC 1 links to Part B-TTI 1d and MATC 2 to Part B-TTI 2f; MATC 3 is the positive normal-over-MAT difference.

4. Are surcharge and cess ignored in that comparison?

No. The linked Part B-TTI totals include the applicable surcharge and cess; use consistent final liabilities.

5. Can old credit be used in a MAT-paying year?

Not when normal tax is no greater than MAT; the utilisation ceiling is then zero.

6. Can new credit be utilised in the year it arises?

Do not treat the current MAT excess as brought-forward credit; it is a separate current-year vintage for subsequent eligible use.

7. Does every AY 2011–12 balance automatically qualify?

No. The fifteen-year window still requires a legally surviving, evidenced balance after prior limits, utilisation and orders.

8. Is oldest-first utilisation an additional statutory tax rate?

No. It is an expiry-management control for allocating lawful utilisation, not a change to the ceiling or entitlement.

9. What if the printed B3 formula gives a negative number?

Reconcile gross credit less earlier use; verify the schema and current utility rather than reproducing an apparent print error.

10. Must totals be reconciled despite inconsistent roman numerals?

Yes. Use the labelled total fields and column sums; the statute and correct arithmetic do not depend on a typographical row reference.

11. Can a 115BAA company retain MATC as a tax-payment entry?

No. Section 115JAA(8) excludes it, and credit is not a cash challan.

12. What does the AY validation say about 115BAB?

Rule 683 prevents filling MATC under either 115BAA or 115BAB. Do not claim an old balance against 115BAB tax.

13. Does 115BA alone switch off MAT credit?

No. Do not confuse the 25% manufacturing option with the separate 115BAA/115BAB MAT exclusions.

14. Can a successor LLP take company credit?

Section 115JAA(7) prevents that succession for the specified company-to-LLP conversion.

15. What changes after an assessment order?

Recompute the affected credit under section 115JAA(6), trace later utilisation and use the legally appropriate correction route.

16. Does this article determine credit treatment in future tax years under the 2025 Act?

No. It reconciles the FY 2025–26 return; subsequent-year legislation and transition rules require a separate check.

Conclusion

Reconcile AY 2026–27 MAT credit by vintage, apply the normal-tax versus MAT ceiling, and verify Schedule MATC, expiry and the lower-regime restrictions.
